Ateliers 2/3/4/ a group dynamic based on individual talents. Twelve partners and more than 100 employees work between Paris, Montpellier and Shanghai. Ateliers 2/3/4/ work on all scales, from the territory to the interior design. Ateliers 2/3/4/ believe « density » is the major component of the city. Organized horizontally, Ateliers 2/3/4/ has the flexibility and high reactivity to deal with a wide variety of scales. Five points contribute to the relevance of Ateliers 2/3/4/ proposals and ensure consistency of thought: Understand the context, observe the territory with a social commitment. Step back, go beyond the constraints, consider that paradoxes generate solutions. Unite, relate, a building is not an object but a place of exchange. Our objective and ambition are to always expand, stretch, give depth – to make the world bigger than it is but also to make it legible, intelligible, to give something to see and understand. By thinking about the permeability that results from the combination of the two great archetypes of human settlements « the courtyard and the pavilion », Ateliers 2/3/4/ seeks to develop « open interiority ». TO CONSTRUCT // TO ENSURE THE FLEXIBILITY AND MODULARITY
Since the dawn of humanity, the primary vocation of architecture is to master time by composing with the elements of nature. The Ateliers 2/3/4/ founders were initiated to architecture in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis. This particular climate became conducive to their willingness to include construction within an accountable approach in order to confront social and environmental issues. DEVELOP THE EVERYDAY CITY //
Within a strong articulation between architecture and the urban dimension, Ateliers 2/3/4/ designs the city from the small scale and, in the clear definition of a private space, seeks its relationship with a more public space. City center or outskirts, city composed in « continuous order » or « open order », each neighborhood should find its right density and contribute to the necessary intensification of human relationships. For Ateliers 2/3/4/ an intervention in a public space, in streets and squares or gardens and parks is first perceived as a whole, an intervention at the service of an overall, urban, landscape and architectural coherence. The “free” space, whether public or private, must not be conceived either in strictly autonomous terms or as a “serving space”. Thus it becomes a programme in itself, and takes into account all the often contradictory expectations of all the desires expressed.
